The Rhythm and Blues

The term R&B is now used to refer to music styles that developed from the blues. Rhythm and blues or R&B was a commercial term introduced in the United States in the late 1940's by Billboard magazine.

It had a series of changes in its meaning. Beginning in the 1960's, after this style of music has contributed to the development of rock and roll, R&B expression began to be used - particularly by white groups - to refer to music styles that developed from the blues and eletric associated blues as well as gospel and soul music.

Since the 1990's, the term contemporary R&B is primarily used to refer to a sub genre with influences from soul, funk and hip-hop to pop music. In its earliest manifestations, called rhythm and blues was a black version of a predecessor of the rock. It was heavily influenced by jazz, particularly the so-called jump blues (Blues in up-tempo, more precisely the boogie woogie influenced by big bands, specifically the swing) as well as the gospel.

In turn, also influenced jazz, giving rise to the so-called hard bop (product of the influence of rhythm and blues, blues and gospel on bebop) and then to Jazz Fusion and Smooth Jazz. The musicians gave little attention to the distinctions made between jazz and rhythm and blues, and generally they recorded in both genders. Several bands (such as accompanying musicians Jay McShann, Tiny Bradshaw and Johnny Otis) also were recording rhythm and blues.

Even an icon like Tadd Dameron's bebop arrangements also produced R&B arrangments to Bull Moose Jackson, and worked for two years as a pianist Bull Moose after establishing himself as a bebop musician. One of the names that stood out in this genre was Muddy Waters. It was only in the cabaret pop the United States, but also in the UK during the 60's, the R&B hit its peak of popularity.

Without suffering the same kind of racial discrimination that limited its acceptance in the US, the British musical groups quickly adopted this style of music, and groups like the Rolling Stones and The Animals and took it to large audiences.
